Brown Henderson Melbye has been mentoring students as an employer with the University of Victoria’s Law Co-op program for well over 10 years. In fact, Samantha Rapoport and our current articled student, Kezia Peterson were both former co-op students who completed work terms at Brown Henderson Melbye and then went on to become articled students with the firm.
On February 20, 2018, Ms. Peterson and Ms. Rapoport attended University of Victoria’s Co-op and Career’s Employer Appreciation Reception, which recognizes the contribution that employers make to the Co-op Program.
The University of Victoria’s Co-op program offers a unique opportunity for students in a variety of departments to alternate class and work terms. University of Victoria’s program is particularly exceptional because 42% of the student body take part in this program, and the students complete more than 3,870 work terms each year, where they gain relevant, hands-on experience in their chosen field.
The University of Victoria is also unusual as it offers its co-op program in 47 different academic departments and is one of the only JD programs in the country to offer a Law Co-op program.
Students registered in first-year Law at the University of Victoria are eligible for admission to the Law Co-op Program. We find these students to be knowledgeable about recent developments in the law, which contributes to the work they produce for our clients.
Our lawyers and staff at Brown Henderson Melbye take our roles as mentors and educators very seriously. It is one of our priorities to offer our co-op and articled students practical hands on experience, and we are proud to say that many of our past co-op and articled students have gone on to do amazing things in our community, our province, and our country.
