Trudi was called to the B.C. bar in 1974 and then practiced for four years with the B.C. Crown Counsel Office in Victoria before leaving to form the firm of Buckler Metzger Brown and Miliken in 1978.

Trudi left that firm in 1984 with Judith Kay to establish Brown and Kay, and then merged one year later with Deborah Acheson and Jane Henderson Q.C. to form Brown Acheson Henderson and Kay (a.k.a. the “Broads on Broad Street”).

After leaving the B.C. Crown Counsel Office, Trudi concentrated her practice in the area of family law. In 1988, Trudi and Jane Henderson Q.C. migrated to Horne Coupar, where they remained until 2001.

In 2001, Kay Melbye joined Trudi and Jane on Oak Bay Avenue. The firm is now established in the heart of Oak Bay Village in the Athlone Court. Jane has since retired from the firm, and Kay is now a partner.

Trudi continues to focus her practice primarily in the area of family law. She was one of the first lawyers in Victoria to embrace collaborative law, and she is still firmly wedded to the concept of resolving family law disputes without going to trial.  She annually edits, along with Madam Justice Huddart of the Court of Appeal of British Columbia, British Columbia Family Law Practice which is used by lawyers across the province every day in their practice, and she is regularly sought after as a presenter, speaker and master of ceremonies of various programs in the legal profession and community.  She also continues to co-chair the National Family Law Program operated under the auspices of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, a program for lawyers and judges across Canada that occurs every two years for five days.

Trudi is a family law mediator and arbitrator, and a member of the B.C. Hear the Child society- which means that she interviews children whose parents are unable to agree on parenting plans.  She is also a member of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (“IAFL”) which enables her to learn about Family Law in other jurisdictions and to meet lawyers who can assist her clients around the world.

Trudi has been named one of the Best Lawyers in Canada, as chosen by her peers, and in December of 2017 Trudi was awarded the inaugural Excellence in Family Law Award by the Law Society of BC.
