Kay Melbye – Partner
Assistant: Sara Miller
Kay was born and raised in Victoria and obtained her Law Degree from the University of Victoria. She was called to the BC Bar in May 1999 and articled and practiced civil litigation with the law firm of Cook Roberts from 1998 through 2001. In April 2001 Kay moved from Cook Roberts to join Trudi L. Brown, K.C. and Jane Henderson, K.C. in their move from Horne Coupar to form the new firm of Brown Henderson on Oak Bay Avenue. Kay’s background in civil litigation serves her well in meeting the varied legal needs of family law clients.
In January, 2009 Kay became a partner and in 2011 the firm moved to its current location in Oak Bay Village. While Kay prefers to resolve matters outside of court when possible, if court is required Kay has extensive experience at all levels of BC Courts.
Kay is qualified as a Family Law Arbitrator, Family Law Mediator, and to prepare Hear the Child Reports. She is a founding member of the Victoria Collaborative Law Group and Kay has additional training in these areas.
Kay is past President of the Victoria Bar Association, past member of the Executive of the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association and is a frequent contributor to Continuing Legal Education programs. She mentors young lawyers and is actively involved in the community. She is past chair of the Board of the Bridges for Women Society and is currently Secretary on the Board of the BC Hear the Child Society and Treasurer on the Board of the Vancouver Island Children’s Health Foundation.
Kay is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, IAML (International Association of Matrimonial Lawyers), AFCC (Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts), IACP (International Association of Collaborative Professionals), Canadian Bar Association, Victoria Bar Association, Victoria Collaborative Professionals, and the B.C.
