Children have a legal right to be protected from abuse of any kind, including neglect and harm or threat of harm.
The BC Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) is mandated to protect children who may be at risk of abuse or neglect, or otherwise in need of protection.
MCFD has the authority to remove children, either temporarily or permanently, from family environments that are determined to be unsafe. If you have reason to believe that a child has been or is likely to be abused or neglected, you have a legal duty to report it to MCFD or the Police.
If you have been contacted by MCFD, a lawyer may be able to assist you with navigating the process.
